Switchboard of Miami, Inc., was established in 1968 when a group of students at Miami-Dade Community College set up a loosely organized telephone service to make housing referrals and to connect roommates. They started to receive calls from young people who needed refuge from life on the streets, referrals for drug problems, and counseling for family crises. From this early time (when volunteers worked with two telephones and a box of index cards containing referral information) to the present, Switchboard of Miami has grown to be one of the most respected HELPlines in the country.In its earliest days as a mental health agency, following the roommate matching service, Switchboard provided for all who needed help. Immediately, the agency began to grow. Housed in a church across the hall from famed activist Abby Hoffman (here in Miami for the 1972 Democratic and Republican Conventions), the agency has always been a beacon for the fringe population.
